BTW, thanks for the info about the various generations of CPUs. 
Very useful going forward.

Now what I need to do is learn how and what to strip out of the 
installed distro so that no unneeded processes are running in the 
background eating CPU cycles.

The AMD K6 - 2+/270 is rather slow but it does have a lot of what 
the kids need and I'm sure a lot they don't.

They really don't need 5 text editors, for example, but they are 
not running in the background so they don't matter so much.

How can I identify what can safely be turned off and removed? 
What I'd like to do is re-master a distro so that it is good for 
this environment. I've got the "Live Linux CDs" book but that 
doesn't cover what can be safely removed.

Tips?
