If you open up synaptics  (yellow box on the task bar) and then click on 
installed, look for Kate (text editor), right click and select mark for 
removal, then click apply and a summary box will appear and tell you what is 
being removed (in this case just kate) but check all the other files as they 
may well be linked to other programs or removing entire suite of programs as 
well.

I said it before and will say it again, check out mepis lovers, it the forum 
for mepis and they are very helpful (thats not to say that you guys & gals 
here are not).
