Sorry about that, but when I said "K6 - 2+/270" originally and 
then said in the note I just posted that it was a "K6 - 2+/500" I 
forgot to mention why the difference. Very simple, I hadn't 
noticed that the speed was settable and that because the CMOS 
battery was old, it had ramped down to 270MHz on its own.

Replaced the battery and, voilá!, it is now a 500MHz machine.

The short lesson is that you should change your CMOS battery 
every 3 years or so.
