I'm afraid I couldn't do justice to the topic Troy.
I'm not that knowledgeable on the topic.

In general my history with package managers started with Mandrake 6.0 and RPM's
After crashing the entire system to where it was not repairable. I went looking
for a better distro/upgrade/package manager.

I found Debian dpkg and apt-get. Simple straight forward command line installs
and updates.

I used apt-get for years because it was the only safe package manager for my
level of user. I tried dselect and had terrible problems, to go back to the the
level of having to do the ol windows user styled 'give it up and reinstall' trip.

Then came the new gui styled package managers adapt, synaptic, etc. they worked
well on the surface, but later were a problem. Why, because I tend to install
lots of things to try and then want to uninstall them. The uninstalling part was
now the problem. Like the article mentioned.

Hopefully someone else on the list can do better. All of the above is no way
scientific, just the ramblings of a general user.
