Can the laptop ping google.com using google's IP?
ping 72.14.207.99
if yes but it can't        ping google.com
then the laptop may need to be told to use a specific dns server

sorry I haven't used XP's internet sharing as a way to feed the internet to 
another computer, so, I'm of no help there.
