[LBo] New xubuntu user still has no net connection

If all I type in is the above, I'm getting the following:
ping ip-address-of-router
bash: ping-ip-addressping: command not found

It did not work, but I typed in  route -n just to see what output it gave me.

I get "Unable to connect" "Firefox can't establish connection..."
