Allan,
Debian is suitable for the old machine. You would need to choose XFCE4
rather than Gnome or you would end up with basically what you had with
Ubuntu. The *buntus are based on Debian.
There is no LiveCD for Debian.
Lonnie, in my opinion, Debian is not really going to be so great for a
complete newbie. You know the ins and outs of getting help and also
for setting Debian up. You are used to it. Remember when you began? I
ran Debian for years, but I remember when I began!
