[LBo] New xubuntu user still has no net connection

Ok, I installed Xubuntu on my laptop and networked it with my Desktop
just now. Try this:
Go back to System --> Network in the Menu.
Select the Wired Network and be sure Roaming is unchecked.
Select Static IP in the drop down menu instead of DHCP.
Put in 192.168.1.2 which is going to be the IP address for your laptop.
The second line will fill in automatically. Leave the Gateway blank
for now.
Reboot and then try to ping 192.168.1.1 again to see if you can reach
the router.
I guess you have other machines hooked up to the router. How are they
set up for the network? Are they using the above IP address?
