I like to have a backup of my whole /etc directory. But that would not
make any difference with your problem if I am correct. Your problem
seems to be a partition with two filesystems on it, the bit from the
windows partition and the rest of it ext3. Normally partitions are
enlarged and then you format the partition with a filesystem. Then you
install or put data on it. You made that partition bigger *after* you
already had ext3 on it. So now you have some strange stuff from Windows
on that partition and the filesystem is not recognized. There is
nothing you can do with it and nothing like menu.lst or fstab will help
you.

I used Debian for several years and Slackware after that. Before Debian
I used RedHat for a few years. I now use Ubuntu. It is easy to
install, but it has the nice things of Debian on it. I recommend Ubuntu
for an up-to-date, easy to install and configure Desktop. I recommend
Debian stable version for a very stable, but not very up-to-date server
or desktop.
