I suggest that you look at the various options and make up your own
mind. dd has drawbacks and all methods probably do. Here are two
illuminating articles:

http://www.halfgaar.net/backing-up-unix
http://www.arsgeek.com/?p=637

After a lot of reading, I reached the conclusion that dar was the best
method. There is a GUI frontend KDar which impressed me unfavourably
but has at least one admirer:
http://wiki.motin.eu/BackingUpALinuxDesktopTheKillerStrategy

After I had (painfully) reached that conclusion, someone mentioned mondo
archive, which is far more user-friendly and actually creates a bootable
DVD (or CD) which you can use for the restoration:
http://www.mondorescue.org/ Unfortunately, my present OS does not have
the libraries needed for the latest version. The previous version
declined to create a DVD even though it appeared to include that option.

Someone else mentioned Ghost4Linux: http://sourceforge.net/projects/g4l

On this subject, as on almost all Linux-related subjects, there are
self-appointed oracles who will tell you, as though their opinions and
knowledge are perfect and infallible, that such and such is the
uncontested and perfect answer. Don't believe them.

Good luck.
