With the backup on USB, you will at least be able to reinstall the old
distro and loose nothing. Just make sure the "dotfiles" are copied, too.

Dotfiles are the hidden files and directories in you home-directory
which contain a lot of application-specific configuration.

When I upgrade distros, I back up the dotfiles for easy reference. But I
use the new distro's configs to see the new possibilities. I then copy
bit by bit back to suit my habits. I DO migrate .firefox and
.mozilla-thunderbird by copying the old ones. That saves me reinstalling
all the addons and also I do not reconfigure my
mail-settings/bookmarks/whatever.

You might need to be extra-careful with the mail you saved on your disk.
I cannot recommend much here, since I use IMAP for my mail. (IMAP stores
all mail and folders on the server, thus I am independant from actual PCs).

HTH,

Stefan
