I believe what you're looking for is hdparm, which not only lets you view and adjust drive parameters but also includes basic benchmarking: 

$ sudo hdparm -tT /dev/hdd

/dev/hdd:
 Timing cached reads:   792 MB in  2.00 seconds = 395.25 MB/sec
 Timing buffered disk reads:  224 MB in  3.01 seconds =  74.44 MB/sec
