Why would you be surprised? Ada Lovelace (1815-1852) wrote what is
considered the first computer program. Grace Hopper (1906-1992) was
one of the first software engineers and invented the compiler.
Frances E. Allen won the 2006 Turing Award, the computer equivalent
of the Nobel prize.
There are many women involved at all levels of computing, and have
been since the beginning.
