What you can do is:

Switch to text console with Ctrl + Alt + F6

Log in as root.

# /etc/init.d/gdm stop

That is, if you use GDM. If you use kdm, then change accordingly.

Install your NVidia driver, and then:

# /etc/init.d/gdm start

You don't even need to reboot.
