Making a small /boot partition forces me to clean the mess of unused 
kernels I've compiled :o)

But seriously... a few years ago, I had asked Henry White that question. 
I'm not sure I can actively reproduce his answer in detail, but in 
short, it's better to keep the kernel on a partition *without* a 
journaled filesystem.

So, in short, I use ext2 for /boot, XFS for the rest... except maybe 
sometimes ReiserFS for /var.
