That's because the Debian packager *thinks* gftp is a GNOME app. One of 
the things I enjoyed about Slackware was its missing handling of 
dependencies.

Now I use CentOS (RHEL clone), and occasionally I rebuild a package when 
the dependencies are not very reasonable. (For example, when using XFCE 
or GNOME as desktop environment, you can use K3B and compile it only 
with Qt and kdelibs installed.)
