What I like about Slackware is that it lets you get some good reflexes
from the start. Since there is practically no automagic configuration,
you just have to read the docs. After some time, it becomes a habit. For
a server, begin with installing the A, AP, L and N package series. Add D
and K if you plan to rebuild your kernel. Later on, you can always
fine-tune your install. Ah, yes: here's the command which returns
Slackware's intelligent dependency resolver:
$ whoami
(...)
Generally, I like the "bare-bones" distros. FWIW, you could equally give
Gentoo and Arch a spin. They're both very crisp, and Gentoo has some
excellent documentation.

This is like asking for the best text editor. Do you want a flamefest or
what? :oD

PS: this said, don't hesitate to give them *all* a try and build your
opinion yourself. This is probably the best advice I can give you. Since
I first fiddled with Linux in 2001, I must have tried out something like
30 different distros (LFS included :o| )
