In RHEL 3; installing using RPM and the GUI tool
redhat-config-packages there are several core groups that cannot be
deselected for installation including X and Gnome. I think they are
required for the installation and first-time boot assistants.

I think we may all agree that the best server setup is achieved by
installing a minimal system and adding features only as the need
arises. This is something that all Linux distributions allow in
different ways, so try a few to find which gives you the most
applicable selection of packages for the minimum effort.
