Well, some distributions, even the most famous and reputedly stable ones
(no names) manage to completely wreck some of the most basic tools. A
recent example is a very famous distribution from France (still no name
;oD) including no less than three DHCP clients by default... but none of
them works correctly. Other example: yesterday I wanted to convert a
very large SQL batch file (a 65 MB plain text file) from ISO-8859-1 to
UTF-8. I ran recode on it... which resulted in a zero length file. My
database dump had just been sent to byte heaven. Fortunately I had
thought to make a backup before. (If you're curious: this was Debian
stable.)
My humble advice would be: try to do what you want to do with another
distribution. Or several other ones. See if it works.
cheers,
Niki (convinced Slacker </hint> :oD)
