I'll just mention my early experiences with Linux. I collected quite a few
distros (many from my local LUG), and just sat down and tried installing
them. If one didn't install on the first try, I just set it aside (thinking
I'd come back to it if I had to). When I got one to install, I played around
with it a while--if it seemed to have everything I wanted (none did) I would
have stopped (leaving it installed).
When I got through the entire pile, I thought back over which distro installed
and came closest to what I wanted, re-installed that, and went with that.
Aside: Back at that time, it was Mandrake, and, iirc, something like 6.0 or
6.1. I still think Mandriva is a pretty good distro for a beginner, but my
last install was Kubuntu (on a laptop), as will my next install (on my
desktop).
