You have chosen the correct solution, but probably have not set it up 
properly.

Open a message in a separate window.  Best to pick one that you want to 
delete.

Go up to the top where all the icons are, including the one for Delete. 
  Right click and you will see "Customize". Left click on that word and 
a window will open with buttons.

Scroll down to the button with "Delete!", note the "!".  Drag and drop 
that into the white box in the row of icons.  That places that button 
there.  While you are at it, drag the old Delete button to the window 
where you got the new one.  Click OK in that window.

Now try the "Delete!" button.  The message window should close when you 
delete the message.  I don't think you have to close Thunderbird for the 
change to take effect.
