Thank you for your response, Anita.  I'm 1/2 way there....  I replaced the
delete icon as you suggested, but when I click on delete! from within the
message, I'm returned to the inbox, with the message I just deleted still
residing in my inbox.  To actually delete the message, I must click on it
from the inbox so it's highlighted, then click the normal delete icon.  Is
it possible to eliminate the 2nd delete step, and have the message deleted
when I click the delete! button?
