Thanks Anita - I have resolved the MadWifi issue.
I was using a version that I downloaded some time ago - noticed that the new 
kernel came with later version - installed that and all works o.k. now.

I am just left with the original conundrum:-
   1] A box with motherboard that supports sata tho set up as pata: running:
       a) Deb testing on kernel 2.6.21-2
       b) Ubuntu Feisty on kernel 2.6.20-16
             both follow the hd** schema.

  2] A box with motherboard that only supports  pata: running:
       a) Deb testing on kernel 2.6.21-2
       b) Ubuntu Feisty on kernel 2.6.20-16
             both follow the sd** schema!!!

Perhaps more "googling" on pata v. sata might help .....?
